An unwelcome visitor....

I will begin this story by saying, conveniently, my husband was in Iowa for an overnight work trip so it was just Olivia and I all night tonight. We had a ball together and because it was nice outside, we played in the backyard for the better part of the evening. She has been able to open and close the sliding glass door for a while, and it seemed much of her entertainment this evening was doing just that. So, I was constantly walking behind her making sure it was closed so the bugs wouldn't get in.
Finally after some major persuasion, I convinced Olivia to come inside. So, we locked everything up and were inside for the night. I would say about an hour and half after we came inside, I put Olivia to bed. No fuss about it, cause she was exhausted from all the fun. I had turned all of the lights out prior to going upstairs so she could begin to relax. Once I came downstairs, I sat on the couch for just a second before logging on to my laptop. Not 10 seconds after I sat on the couch, something flew across the living room into the entryway. HOLY CRAP!! I dove onto the floor, and literally crawled like a mad woman until I reached the kitchen table. So, there I was, hysterical underneath the table to try to dodge this thing. I assumed it was a bird at this time, so I called my husband (again, in IOWA!!!) to ask in a calm manner...how the hell do I get this thing out!!!??? He couldn't help laughing his ass off at me, as did Derrick in the background! After I was able to get them stopped, I asked again, what am I going to do!!?? There was no way I was going to be able to sleep a wink knowing this thing was flying in my house!! So, he said call Brian (my hero!!!!) Brian is my sitter's husband...not to mention a Woodford County Cop!! Yeah, help is on the way!
So, I crawled across the floor so I could keep an eye on this thing, and made it to the edge of the room with my back against the wall. I called Brian and Kathy answered the phone. In a panic and screaming as it came flying back through the room, I asked if Brian was available to come rescue me! She said of course, and he was on his way. Well, there was no way I was going to just hang out with it flying around the house, so I made it back to the table (underneath of course) and then snuck out the sliding glass doors to the back porch! Some of you may be thinking, what a great mother, leaving her two year old in the house with this thing flying all around. However, the good news was, I had shut her door so I knew she was safe! Therefore, I didn't feel the least bit guilty standing on my back porch, scared like a two year old myself! I watched it fly all around the place for a few minutes until Brian got there....again, my hero!
He walked in the house and we hadn't seen it for a while, so we started opening all the windows. My first thought when he did that was, aren't more liable to get in!!?? However, it was the only way we had a chance of getting it to fly back outside! So, we opened all the windows and the front and back doors to persuade him to leave! Once Brian figured out where it went, he provided the shock of the year....it wasn't a bird after all....it was a BAT!!!!!!! He had landed on the blinds going upstairs and wasn't making another move! Brian kept his eye on him while he informed me of this, and I told him I could have gone my entire life without ever knowing the truth. I was okay with it being a bird, but a bat....that was really creepy!! Brian asked if I had my camera on me, and couldn't believe I hadn't already thought of taking a picture (apparently he knows of my addiction). So, he was able to get this shot!!
So, not knowing quite how to handle this new information, and never having had to remove a bat before, Brian called a buddy of his (also a cop) for some assistance. They knew if they continued to shine their flashlights on him, he wouldn't budge. So, with the help of a broom, a box and a large pizza pan to cover up the box, they were able to get it down on the ground, into the box, and then outside! Did I mention they were my heroes!!!
I was creeped out the entire rest of the night, and really had a hard time sleeping in my own bed. It took me quite some time to be able to even close my eyes, but finally I did. And, I could not believe Olivia slept through the entire thing. She never even made a peep as they were banging the broom right outside her door! It's a good thing too, cause I'm not sure I would have been able to rescure her and myself...she may have been on her own! :-)
Anyway, they got it out and we got a good laugh about it...later that week of course! I ended up receiving a nice little reminder from Brian later that week as well. He ransacked his kids' rooms trying to find a bat beanie baby and had it attached to Olivia's bag when I came to pick her up! Very funny!!! And my husband couldn't resist of course. I walked upstairs one afternoon and found it attached to the blind where the real one had planted himself. Even though I knew it wasn't real, there was a split second I almost wet myself! :-) So, hopefully that will be the end of that unwelcome visitor!
